Scots pooch rushed to vets after wolfing down surgical face mask dumped by selfish litter lout

A peckish Spaniel had a lucky escape after swallowing a discarded face mask that had been dumped on the ground by a selfish litter lout.

Little Kobe was rushed to the vet by his horrified owner after realising that the pooch had speedily wolfed down the surgical face covering.

Quick-thinking vets at the University of Glasgow’s Small Animal Hospital quickly sent him for an x-ray and worryingly found that the mask contained a metal nose wire.

They decided to try and make Kobe sick in a bit to retrieve the covering before it could cause damage to his intestines.

Luckily the little dog was able to vomit it back up in one piece but didn’t appear to be overly pleased with the whole ordeal.

The veterinary hospital has now issued a warning to members of the public and urged them to think twice before dumping their face masks.

The hospital said: “Kobe was out for an afternoon walk when he spotted a discarded face mask and wolfed it down.

“Luckily, his owner recognised the risk of this causing damage to his gastro-intestinal tract, and brought him straight to our Out of Hours Emergency Service.

“An x-ray was taken to check if the mask contained a nose wire, as this increases the risk of complications – it did, but since this appeared small and flexible our team opted to make Kobe vomit in the hope of retrieving the mask.

“Kobe was given an injection to make him sick, and fortunately the face mask was brought back up again.

“You can see from Kobe’s sad expression that this was not a fun experience, but happily there was no serious damage caused in his case.

“A good reminder that littering is not only bad for our environment, but poses a danger to our pets too.”
