Scots pensioner told not to drive because of eyesight killed cyclist in horror smash

A pensioner warned not to drive because of his failing eyesight killed a cyclist when he hit him with his car.

John Johnstone was driving home from a vehicle body repair business when he collided with Hanno Garbe on a Highland road.

Johnstone, 84, was told months earlier by an optometrist that he had cataracts in both eyes and must not drive until he had an operation to remove them.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that on the day of the crash, March 4 last year, he hadn’t had the op.

Johnstone, of Kingussie, admitted causing the death of Hanno, 57, by driving dangerously on the B9152 Aviemore to Kincraig near Loch Alvie.

He failed to see the German national and hit him with his car.

Hanno died the next day.

Judge Lord Fairley called for a background report to be prepared on Johnstone ahead of sentencing next month.
