Scots pensioner left with broken hip after ‘terrifying’ handbag robbery on Edinburgh street

A man has been arrested in connection with the assault and robbery of a Scots OAP who broke her hip during an alleged handbag mugging.

The incident took place in Edinburgh at around 4.35pm on Monday, February 8, as the 82-year-old victim walked down Hamburgh Place.

She was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment to her serious injury and has since been released.

A police probe was launched with officers scouring CCTV in a bid to find the person responsible.

They urged members of the public to get in touch with any information or camera footage from the area at the time.

Police Scotland have now confirmed that a 33-year-old man has been charged in connection.

A spokesperson said: “Detectives in Edinburgh have arrested and charged a 33-year-old man in connection with an assault and robbery in Leith.

“The incident happened around 4.35pm on Monday, 8 February, 2021, on Hamburgh Place when an 82-year-old woman was assaulted and robbed by a man.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and the man is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, February 18.”
