Scots pensioner clapped out of intensive care after hard battle with coronavirus

A Scots pensioner was clapped out of intensive care after a four-week battle with coronavirus.

James Mackenzie, known as Jim, was admitted to NHS Forth Valley Royal Hospital last month after suffering with breathing difficulties and a high temperature.

The 80-year-old, from Stenhousemuir, was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Further tests revealed the grandfather-of-three also had Covid-19.

However, after four long weeks at the hospital in Falkirk James was given a guard of honour by nurses who had been looking after him.

Granddaughter Georgia Guy, 21, said: "He also has underlying conditions surrounding his breathing.

"It's such a relief to see the progress he has made.

"We were unable to visit him due to restrictions at the hospital for all visitors.

"Luckily he also had his mobile phone with him so we could keep in contact that way.

"The staff really could not have been more amazing and we’re just so thankful that he’s now home and recovering.

"He’s taken aback with all of the well wishes and wants to take the opportunity to thank everyone for the support."

NHS Forth Valley took to social media to post a video of James being wheeling out hosptial.

They wrote: "Staff from ward B12 at Forth Valley Royal Hospital gathered today to celebrate the discharge of an 80-year-old patient who has recovered from Covid-19 and is now able to return to his own home after four weeks in hospital."

Nurses clapped as Jim was wheeled out of the ward B12 by staff.

Hundreds of people left messages of support for the dad-of-three.

Phil Diane Brownlie said: "Aw Brilliant.

James Mackenzie is now out of intensive care at Forth Valley (Forth Valley NHS)

"Brought a wee tear to my eyes there.

"Well done to all the staff in Ward and the rest of the hospital.

"Doing a fantastic job. All the best to James."

Julie Bryant added: "Glad to see a good story about this COVID19.

"Best of luck to James and well done B12 and all the staff at the hospital."

Mary-Jane Armstrong wrote: "How wonderful.

"Thank goodness he's on the mend."
