Scots parents divided over council decision to ban teacher gifts in schools

Scots parents have been left divided over plans to ban pupils from giving their teachers thank you gifts.

North Ayrshire Council became the latest Scottish local authority to ban the practice in a bid to make school more affordable for parents.

The cost of the school day policy was approved at a meeting last week where it was stated there would be a “clear statement to ensure no gifts for teachers or staff”.

The cost cutting exercise will also see 'alternatives' found for cash donations and fundraising days.

But Scots parents were split over whether the pans were a good idea, with some saying it should be up to individual families if they wish to get the teacher a gift.

Mary Connor said: "No teacher has ever asked for a gift. It’s parents who want to show their gratitude and why would anyone want to prevent them from doing that. Teachers don’t expect gifts. They do their job because it’s a vocation."

Anne Benzie said: Gifts are greatly appreciated by all staff working with children but the most meaningful presents are the ones made by a child. My favourite present ever was a drawing of me which was framed. A very talented 6 year old!!"

Pauline Dunning said it's up to pupils and parents to decide, saying: "No. It's a tradition not a rule. Kids love giving teachers a gift so why take that from them too."

But other parent said gifts were not the problem. Lee-Ann Neil said: "It’s not the wee fiver gift it’s the constant want of money from the school it’s relentless."

While others thought gifts were not necessary. Anne Catherine Barrett: "I think cards are sufficient if parents/pupils want to thank teachers.

But others said a ban would be welcomed.

Rosemary Moreland said: "Probably most teachers as well as parents would be happy for this to become law. A simple card thanking the teacher for his/ her teaching your child, would be sufficient.

Liz McPhee said: "If parents feel the need to give something why not have a charity box then, maybe could buy something for the school that way everyone benefits.

In 2017 Falkirk Council's policy to ban teacher gifts was introduced and was met by anger from parents who said there was 'no harm' in giving gifts, but council bosses said it was policy that no gifts or hospitality could be received by any council staff.
