Scots optician gives tips on how to keep glasses fog free when wearing a face mask

A Paisley optician has revealed how glasses wearers can keep their specs clear when using a face mask.

Coverings have become more widespread in Scotland now after the Scottish Government made it a legal requirement to wear them around the shops last week.

It is hoped the move will further limit the spread of coronavirus as health officials continue to work on eliminating it from Scotland.

But a number of Scots who wear specs have stated that face coverings cause their glasses to steam up, making their vision a bit ropey around the aisles.

One person tweeted a photo of his fogged up glasses as he sticks to the rules on face masks.

He jokingly captioned the pic: “Canny believe a need to pick between breathing or seeing.”

Gordon Kyle has revealed three tips that will keep your glasses fog free when wearing your face mask (Miller and McClure)

Gordon Kyle, of Miller and McClure Opticians in Paisley, has given three tips on how to keep your vision secure while protecting others around you from potential coronavirus.

The experienced optician firstly asked viewers to put their mask on first before putting their glasses on top.

For his first tip, he says that putting tissue paper along the top edge of the mask will stop steam shooting up towards the glasses.

Gordon also recommends tying a knot in the face mask so it makes it look more like a “wee package” and contains the steam.

One other alternative he suggests is potentially moving to contact lenses.

Speaking about the video, Gordon told the Daily Record : “Lots of people have been complaining about the lenses fogging up and I wanted to give simple solutions to this.

“There has been chat online about using shaving foam, toothpaste and even methylated spirits but my concern is that it could cause long term damage to the lenses.

“The other thing folk have mentioned for the lenses is washing up liquid. I’m just not convinced that it’s risk free.

Gordon and his colleague Jacklyn are using their musical talents to raise money for the Beatson Cancer Charity.

Jacklyn had been due to take part in this year’s Kiltwalk to raise funds for the charity in memory of her husband Craig, who sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2018 at the age of 40.

But the pair are now performing songs remotely to raise funds for the charity after the Kiltwalk was cancelled due to coronavirus.

More information on their fundraiser can be found here.
