Scots nurse and dad of 13 in quarantine with entire family after catching coronavirus

A dad of 13 kids has told how his whole household has to be quarantined after he was diagnosed with COVID-19.

Roy Hann, a nurse practitioner at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, believes he picked up the infection at work.

He’s now got to stay inside, along with wife Emma, 50, and the 10 kids who still live at home - Alice, 21, Sophia, 27, Annabelle, 19, Jennifer, 17, Isabella, 16, Jonas, 14, Enos, 12, Eva, 10, Posy, 8, and five-year-old Meg.

The whole family is now in quarantine – including daughter Sophia who works as a carer – as Roy is unable to self-isolate in the packed five-bedroom home in the Charleston area of the city.

He said: “When there are so many people in the house following the guidelines is so difficult. I have been around the family for days. We are just going to carry on and hopefully it will pass through everyone and be OK.”

The 10 Hann children living in the house under quarantine range from five to 27 years old.

Roy realised that strict self-isolation would be impossible.

“I have a five-year-old who doesn’t understand,” he said.

He said his symptoms have been very mild and he was surprised to receive a positive result after a test in the Kings Cross health centre in Dundee.

“Even with the symptoms I have had, I would normally have gone to work. How many people have had it and not known about it?

“That is what we need to think about. I would not have had the test if I had not been an NHS worker."

He assumes he contracted the virus while working in the Covid-19 section of the hospital, but “it could have been in the supermarket, we just don’t know”.

He said he was not scared about the effect the virus could have on him and his family, despite living with Type-2 diabetes.
