Scots nightclub owner insists venues must stay open despite Covid cases spike

A nightclub owner has insisted venues must be allowed to remain open indefinitely despite the rise in Covid cases.

Donald MacLeod reopened his Garage and Cathouse in Glasgow on Thursday for the first time in almost 18 months.

On Friday, Nicola Sturgeon announced a record 6835 new cases, a daily figure that dropped to 5858 yesterday.

But MacLeod says clubs must be allowed to remain open providing they enforce measures such as mask wearing.

He has been vocal about the pressure lockdown has had on the nightlife industry.

Macleod said: “I don’t think we could have gone on much longer – it was costing us £60,000 a month in lost revenues.

“With 80 per cent of the population double-jabbed we must be allowed to stay open and obtain some form of herd immunity.

“I don’t think there is a need for Covid passports for people to present at the door. It’s an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy and would be very difficult to enforce.”

There have been eight more Covid deaths in Scotland in the past 24 hours, according to Scottish Government figures.

The 5858 new cases brought the total number since the pandemic began to 407,660.

The total death toll under the daily measure – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – rose by eight to 8103.

There were 494 people in hospital, 49 of them in intensive care.
