Scots nightclub boss James Mortimer targeted in firebomb attack is supported by Sir Alex Ferguson and other celeb pals

Celebrity friends of nightclub boss James Mortimer have rallied round him after he was targeted in a firebomb attack.

Sir Alex Ferguson was one of the first to call the businessman hours after thugs set fire to luxury cars parked outside his home.

Ex-Rangers boss Walter Smith and former Celtic manager Neil Lennon also contacted the hospitality tycoon to offer support.

It comes after two men were seen torching a Range Rover and Mercedes in Mortimer’s driveway in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, on Tuesday afternoon.

The attack happened hours after his neighbour Stephen McCann had his £260,000 Rolls-Royce Cullinan destroyed in a fire on Monday night.

An accelerant was used to start both blazes at the properties, which are just 100 yards apart.

A source said Mortimer, 76, is convinced the offenders targeted his neighbour by mistake.

The businessman – whose family own private members club 29 and the Rogano restaurant in Glasgow – is said to be unaffected by the drama.

But he is concerned about the impact on his wife Rena and McCann.

The source said: "James is his usual bullish self and appears to be surprised at people's reaction to it all.

"He's taking it in his stride and has been kept going by the support he's been getting from his friends.

"Fergie phoned him, Neil Lennon and Walter Smith have also checked in with him.

"He says he has no idea who is behind the attack but believes that his neighbour was targeted by mistake.

"He feels bad about that. Whoever is responsible thought the house with the Rolls-Royce belonged to James and torched it.

"Then they came back the next day when they realised they'd messed up.

"James appears to be neither up nor down but he will be concerned about how this will affect his family, especially Rena.

"James has received hundreds of messages from people in sport and entertainment.

"The Covid-19 crisis has forced him to shut like everyone else. He's not done any business deals or upset anyone.

"He just wants things to get back to normal as quickly as possible."

Former Manchester United boss Ferguson and Mortimer have been close friends for decades.

Mortimer also has a close relationship with Smith and Lennon, who have supported his charity initiatives.

McCann is the boss of PPI Scotland and made a fortune pursuing compensation claims for people who were mis-sold insurance.

Thieves targeted his home several years ago. He hired a firm of private investigators to probe the break-in and offered a £50,000 reward for information on who was responsible after Police Scotland failed to identify a suspect.

Police are investigating a series of fire attacks on upmarket properties within days.

Former Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell's £2million home in Thorntonhall, near Glasgow, was also damaged in a fire.

Cars were also destroyed in the incident at about 1am on Wednesday.

The £2.9million home of businessman Brendan Hegarty in Glasgow's Cleveden area also suffered fire damage in two separate attacks within 24 hours last week.

Hegarty helped to launch Tan-Luxe fake tan – the world's first tanning water. He is also a publican and owns Sugar Cube in Glasgow.

Police Scotland said their investigation into the fires was "ongoing".

Mortimer declined to comment.
