Scots NHS staff create virtual band and perform uplifting rendition of Proclaimers to say 'we'll walk the extra mile'

Inspiring NHS staff have formed a virtual band to plead with people to 'stay home and save lives'.

Staff from NHS Ayrshire and Arran performed the Proclaimers 'I'm Gonna Be' to remind people to stay home while they go the extra mile for the nation.

The idea was the brainchild of student nurse Eilidh Houston who plays the trombone.

Eilidh, 30, who works at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock says she came up with the idea while missing her own band practices while she is on coronavirus lockdown when she's not working.

The University of the West of Scotland student told the Daily Record: "I am in a band myself and I know that lots of my colleagues are too, playing various different instruments.

"I thought it would be good if we played The Proclaimers hit because the message to people is, 'you stay home and we will walk the extra mile'."

Eilidh sent her pals music to play along to before using her tech savvy to put it all together.

She added: "I sent them all a backing track to play their instruments along to. If you notice everyone is wearing headphones in their videos. They recorded themselves and each sent it to me and I put them all together using an app.

"There is so much doom and gloom on social media at the moment because of coronavirus so I thought this might be a good way to lighten the mod and cheer people up."

Eilidh says she and her colleagues who come from all over Scotland, including Ayrshire, Greater Glasgow and Dumfries and Galloway had expected to get "maybe 1,000 views' but were stunned when it exploded overnight and in less than 24 hours has gained more than 100,000 views.

Eilidh, from Irvine, said: "The response has been incredible. We thought we would maybe get 1,000 views because between us all we know a lot of people but it has gone way beyond that, which is just amazing.

"We just want to spread a bit of positivity and get the message across at the same time for people to stay home and save lives."
