Scots must still stay vigilant as UK terror warning moves down from 'severe to substantial'

Scots have been urged to remain vigilant as a terror attack is still “likely” even after Priti Patel dropped the UK’s terrorist threat level from Severe to Substantial.

The Home Secretary announced the move on Monday after consulting with the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC), the UK’s centre for the analysis and assessment of international terrorism which has responsibility for setting international terrorism threat levels.

Previously, it was thought an attack was "highly likely".

Police Scotland said they had no specific information that a Scottish attack was imminent but said the new threat level still means an attack is deemed likely.

Assistant Chief Constable Pat Campbell said: “At this time there is nothing to suggest that there is any specific threat to Scotland.

"However I would remind the people of Scotland that they should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Police Scotland.”

The "substantial" level is the middle of five levels of terror threat. According to MI5, they are:

  • LOW means an attack is highly unlikely
  • MODERATE means an attack is possible, but not likely
  • SUBSTANTIAL means an attack is likely
  • SEVERE means an attack is highly likely
  • CRITICAL means an attack is highly likely in the near future
