Scots murderer who stabbed teenage boy through the heart dies in prison

A Scots man who murdered a teenage boy after by stabbing him through the heart has died in prison.

Francis Docherty, aged 57, of Bogany Terrace in Castlemilk, Glasgow was found guilty of killing David Ferns.

He was sentenced to life at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, August 12, 1987.

Docherty had been arguing with the 16-year-old's older brother when the pair were out walking their dogs.

David, of Stravanan Road, also in Castlemilk, arrived to help his sibling during the argument between them.

However, he was then fatally stabbed through his heart by Docherty.

Docherty was reported missing from at HMP Edinburgh, then known as Saughton Prison, on Thursday, October 21, 2004.

Prison staff had raised the alarm after the then 40-year-old had failed to return from a work placement at a charity shop.

However, a spokesperson had said: "We do not believe, from his behaviour in prison, that Frances Docherty presents a specific threat."

Francis Docherty, aged 57, died at HMP Perth on Sunday, January 23, 2022, according to the Scottish Prisons Service (SPS).

Police Scotland have been informed and the death in custody has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

A Fatal Incident Inquiry will also be held in due course.

An SPS spokesperson said: "Francis Docherty, 57, a prisoner from HMP Perth has died on 23 January 2022.

"He was sentenced at Glasgow High Court in 1987.

"Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

"A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
