Scots mum shocked after claiming son finds 2,500 staples inside box of Coco Pops

A Scots mum was left stunned after she claims her son found 2,500 staples inside a box of Coco Pops.

Yvonne Glendinning Cadden says her son Shay, 16, was pouring his cereal as usual this morning when a full box of 2,500 Pen and Gear staples fell on to his plate.

The mum says the Kellogg's 720g box was definitely sealed and had not been opened since she bought it from her local Asda supermarket in Livingston last week.

Pen and Gear staples are sold in Asda as part of the stationary range.

Kellogg’s say their products go through a rigorous process - including metal detection -before they leave the factory and say it "would  not be possible" for the staples to have got inside the box at the factory.

Yvonne said: "I got them last week in Asda. My son poured them into his bowl this morning and they fell in.

"We don't even keep anything like that at home. I have lung disease husband is my carer so there are no office workers.

"I'm hoping it wasn't done as a prank in store. Kellogg's say all products are scanned by metal detectors and staff not allowed anything on them while working."

Yvonne says the family are seeing the funny side.

She added: "I'm just relieved it hadn't opened up inside. Coco Pops are definitely a staple of Shay's diet but that's going too far."

A spokesperson for Kellogg's said: "At the final stage of our food production process, Kellogg’s cereal products pass through metal detection.

"It would not be possible for an item like this to enter the food in the factory and then be transported to store. Kellogg’s has very strict and independently verified food safety standards in place.’’

Asda has been contacted for comment.
