Scots mum's hope of real justice for paedophiles moves a step closer

A brave mum has won the first battle in her campaign to have tougher sentences for child sex abusers.

Carol Burns, 48, who petitioned the Scottish Government, is "very pleased" it has been discussed in parliament.

She started her campaign after paedophile teacher William Wright, 80, was jailed for just 20 months.

Carol said: "I was apprehensive but very pleased that they took it seriously enough to put to the committee on September 22.

"I'm glad to hear the Scottish Sentencing Board has been written to and they will also be contacting Rape Crisis Scotland and Victim Support Scotland to get their views.

"I'm hoping and praying they understand how this could help with getting the justice we all deserve.

"You just can't rehabilitate a sex offender in a matter of months."

Collette Stevenson, SNP MSP for East Kilbride, said: "Carol’s case is appalling. I'm keen to understand what more can be done."

Carol waived her right to anonymity to accuse a school of covering up abuse.

Wright preyed on female pupils at Eastwood High School in Newton Mearns, near Glasgow, between 1974 and 1990.

In 2018, he was jailed for abusing former pupils and earlier this year went on trial for abusing Carol and two others.

One victim told how he abused her over 1000 times.

Wright, of Elderslie, Renfrewshire, struck a deal to plead guilty to charges in relation to her.

He was jailed for 20 months but is expected to serve just half that due to good behaviour rules.
