Scots mum of all-vegan family urges Scots to convert - and not just for January

A Scots mum is urging families to go vegan even though she says people might accuse her of brainwashing her kids.

Jude Dryden and her husband Chris are both vegans and have brought up their three children, Callum, seven, Winnie, five and 15-month-old Finlay to follow the plant-based diet too.

The mum-of-three, from Carnoustie says no mater what people say, she thinks eating animals is 'cruel' and veganism is so much healthier.

She said: "Some people might say I'm brainwashing my children, but I think it's the other way around.

"I have told my kids we don't eat animals because it's cruel, but I was brought up eating meat without really knowing the truth of what it meant."

Jude was just seven-years-old when she and her sister Sarah, then five, decided to become vegetarians, even though their parents were meat eaters, after seeing livestock being transported for slaughter on the motorway.

She said: "We were on holiday in the Highlands as we often were and we saw a lorry packed with animals and my sister asked where it was going. When our parents told us I remember just feeling horrified and my sister said 'I am never eating meat again' and I decided the same, and neither of us ever have.

"As soon as I understood what those animals went through there is just no way I could have eaten meat again."

Jude made the jump from vegetarian to vegan in her late 20s when she read into the dairy industry.

Female cows are bred for milk so when they give birth to a male calf, he will either be sold on and raised for veal or killed shortly after birth.

She added: "What they do to those cows and their babies is absolutely awful. I couldn't believe it, I was so ignorant to how the food I was consuming comes to be on my plate. That's when  I decided to become vegan."

Jude's husband Chris is also vegan and, in a happy coincidence, had made the lifestyle decision long before meeting his wife.

So when the couple had first son Callum the natural progression was that they would raise him as vegan too, but the couple faced a difficult decision when breastmilk was not enough for their baby son.

She said: "With Callum, I had a c-section and ended up developing sepsis so I wasn't able to provide breast milk temporarily. He had to be topped up with formula. I really did not want that to happen, but it was either give him formula or he starves, so it wasn't a choice.

"But even then, we looked into it and chose the one which was the least damaging to animals."

Jude said: "Kids eat what their parents eat, don't they? So why wouldn't we raise our kids on the same diet we have?"

And according to the mum-of-three, with veganism growing in popularity in recent years, the choices of foods are expanding all the time.

She said: "There's vegan alternatives for everything nowadays - it's not just plants!

"That's great but in a way it kind of makes our diet that wee bit more unhealthy because now we can eat rubbish like chocolate and crisps and frozen convenience foods."

Jude says now her older kids at are school, their specialised diet can prove problematic - but she even managed to overcome that stumbling block.

She said: "I give Callum packed lunches but he likes to get school dinners with his friends too. So, I pleaded with the council to offer a vegan option and eventually, they did. If I'm honest, sometimes it's still not an amazing choice, but the fact that there is a choice shows progress."

Jude says everyone should look into how food comes from farm to their plate and encourages anyone thinking about becoming vegan to do it.

She said: "I think a lot of people just don't realise what happens and if they did, they would perhaps make different decisions about diet.

"I know I feel healthier since becoming vegan. I used to suffer from sinus issues and headaches and now that's all gone and after reading up on it, it was the dairy that was causing that.

"I would definitely recommend it, but not just for this month, and it's never been easier to change to veganism."
