Scots MP quarantines himself after coronavirus scare at bus summit

A Scottish MP has placed himself in self-isolation after attending a conference where someone was later diagnosed with coronavirus.

Falkirk SNP MP John McNally took the decision after his visit to a bus summit earlier this month in Westminster.

The 69-year-old was en-route to a public engagement to the University of St Andrews when he decided to self-isolate as a precaution.

His choice to quarantine himself came after a warning from Labour MP Alex Sobel about a person at the UK Bus Summit who had contracted the deadly virus. The event had been attended by 250 people.

Alex Sobel MP contacted John McNally about a person contracting coronavirus at the summit (SWNS)

McNally said: "I was half way to St Andrews when I got his call, and decided right away it was sensible to call off and go home."

He added he hadn't been contacted by organisers of the summit which took place on February 6.

Sobel has cancelled all public engagements for the recommended 14-day quarantine period as a precaution after attending the event.

He wrote: "Whilst I have been informed that I am at very low risk, I have called 111 to be formally assessed.

"As a precaution, we have cancelled all engagements until next Thursday when the 14-day potential incubation period will end."

Nine people in the UK have so far tested positive for coronavirus, with eight of those now discharged from hospital.

In China, where the virus was first discovered, the death toll has risen by 105 to 1770.

Globally, the number of people affected by the deadly virus stands at 68,500, according to the country's National Health Commission.
