Scots mountain rescue heroes in dramatic 12 hour mission for 'inexperienced' walkers

Hero rescue crews battled for 12 hours in a search for three missing walkers on a 3,000ft Scots mountain in an epic helicopter rescue.

The inexperienced walkers had taken to the hills without a map or head torch and became separated while climbing down Beinn a Chlaidheimh in Wester Ross around 9.45pm on Saturday night.

Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team were called into action and told two of the group to stay together and where they were.

One walker by himself told mountain rescue he would make his way towards a nearby car park with his phone's battery dying.

The search continued night and day (DMRT)

A helicopter was called in from the Coastguard which was later joined by others.

When the crews arrived at the car park the man was not there.

Meanwhile the two other men were dramatically airlifted from the massive mountain while the and the search continued for the remaining party member.

Another group said they had seen a man matching his description and he was later found.

The team enjoyed a hotel breakfast at 10.30am to celebrate.

A statement read: "Rescue 151 from Inverness came on scene and managed to uplift the two walkers from the top of Beinnn a Chlaidheimh bringing them back to Dundonnell base before departing back to Inverness.

The massive operation took 12 hours (DMRT)

"With still no sign of the lone Walker rescue 948 from Stornaway came on scene and carried out search taskings they also uplifting two hill parties into the search area.

"With fuel running low they returned to Stornaway to refuel. Rescue 948 was soon back on scene carrying out more tasking.

"With more members arriving at the base another six personnel drove up the track to Achneigie at which point they met and spoke to a couple of walkers who’d seen a male fitting the mispers description. A short time later the misper was located and brought back to base.

"Team stood down around 10.30 then headed down to the Dundonnell hotel for a well earned breakfast."
