Scots motorist who raced to girlfriend at 90mph on Christmas Eve faces sack

A Scots motorist who raced at 90mph to see his girlfriend on Christmas Eve faces losing his job after a careless driving charge.

Jordon Dunbar was caught by cops as he sped along the M8 motorway between Edinburgh and Glasgow in his Seat Ibiza.

Officers on mobile patrol watched as the 22-year-old tried to force other road users out of his way.

Dunbar appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday and admitted careless driving.

Fiscal depute Drew Long told how the police patrol spotted Dunbar emerging onto the M8 from a junction at around 5.15pm.

Mr Long said Dunbar “accelerated rapidly” to overtake a number of vehicles and drove at speeds up to 90mph.

The prosecutor said the red Seat went close behind cars in front in the second lane, moving right and left on several occasions, before officers pulled him over.

Defence agent Ross Gardner said Dunbar had finished work late and was driving to see his partner who was due to leave to go to her family’s home for Christmas.

Mr Gardner said his client wanted to see her before he had to leave to see his own family and drove “too quickly and impatiently”.

The solicitor said Dunbar, who already had three points on licence, was a probationary driver at the time of the offence on December 24 2019.

Probationary periods last two years and drivers receiving six penalty points or more during that time have their licences revoked.

Mr Gardner said Dunbar needed a driving licence to work as a roadside breakdown fitter and would likely be “terminated” if he lost it.

Sheriff Daniel Kelly fined Dunbar, of Blackburn, West Lothian, £450 and endorsed his licence with eight penalty points.
