Scots miracle twins born weighing less than seven pounds combined start school

Scots miracle twins who were born weighing less than seven pounds combined have defied the odds and started p1 at mainstream school.

Lianna and Kali were born seven weeks premature at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow in September 2015.

Little Kali was 4lbs 4oz when she was delivered, shortly before sister Lianna who was a tiny 2lbs 2oz.

While Kali headed home after 11 days in intensive care, little Lianna's future looked very bleak.

The girls were born seven weeks early (NICU RCH)

Lianna stayed in ICU for around four months before she was allowed to go home to be reunited with her sister.

But just two weeks later, she was back in hospital for another four months.

The tots were even christened together in the RCH's sanctuary room.

Lianna endured 15 different surgeries and multiple health scares before she was finally allowed to come home for good.

The girls, both turn five in a few weeks and have started p1 at their mainstream primary school.

To mark NICU Awareness Month their family have shared their amazing story and are thanking the 'lifesavers' to whom they 'couldn't be more grateful'.

September is NICU Awareness Month (NICU RCH)

A spokesperson for the family said: "Although we visit the children’s hospital regularly both girls are doing amazing.

"Lianna is achieving things we could only dream of.

"On Wednesday, August 12 they both started mainstream school together.

"I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone in neonatal and the children hospital.

"Literal lifesavers."

Proud of the girls' progress and compelled to share their journey, adorable school photos were shared on the RCH NICU's Facebook page.

Visit the ward's official social media platforms for more information on fundraising and NICU Awareness Month.
