Scots man who threatened to 'petrol bomb every door' on ex's street dodges jail

A man who threatened to petrol bomb every door in the housing estate where his ex-girlfriend lived after a row about cash has dodged jail.

Kevin Burden, 46, had voicemailed: "If I don't get money back today I'm going to come up to Arthur's and put a gallon of petrol through every door in Hallglen."

Falkirk Sheriff Court was told that the "Arthur" referred to was a man known to Burden's former partner, Laura McLaughlan.

Prosecutor Katie Cunningham said that on September 8th 2020, Ms McLaughlan received "a string" of offensive text messages from Burden.

Miss Cunningham said: "I'll try and summarise these as best I can - he called her 'c***', 'b******' and 'junkie' and said, 'Trust me, I'll sort the lot of yous out'."

A woman friend also received a text message from Burden.

It read, "Tell Laura I'm on my way up the Hallglen and she'd better phone the po-po [police]."

He also said he was going to Ms McLaughlan's house to attack Arthur.

The court heard the call caused the woman friend to be concerned for Ms McLaughlan's safety, and the woman friend then received the voicemail from a man whom she recognised as Burden, in which he made the threats about putting petrol through all the doors in the Hallglen estate in Falkirk.

Burden concluded that voicemail by saying, "Don't f*** with me, I'm f****** telling you."

Miss Cunningham said: "The police were called and the accused was arrested and he made no reply to caution and charge.

Burden, of Denny, Stirlingshire, pleaded guilty to two charges of statutory breach of the peace.

Solicitor Billy Hendry, defending, said: "He had been experiencing some family problems."

Sheriff Derek Hamilton sentenced Burden to a three month tagging order with a 5pm to 5am curfew.
