Scots man arrested in connection with alleged cocaine smuggling plot

A man from East Renfrewshire has been arrested in connection with an alleged food delivery drug smuggling plot.

Mohammed Khan, from Newton Mearns, was remanded in custody after appearing at Carlisle Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old has been charged with conspiracy to import class A drugs after a massive police operation across the UK and in Europe.

A warehouse in the Netherlands was targeted by officers from the Organised Crime Partnership who believed it was going to be used to facilitate drug smuggling.

Properties in Glasgow, London and Kent were also searched during coordinated raids.

The investigation was launched after officers analysed messages shared on EncroChat – the encrypted messaging platform that was brought down in June as part of Operation Venetic.

Two other men, Thomas Payne, 47, from Kent and Ciaran Jones, 32, from London have also  been arrested, charged and remanded in custody.

OCP Operations Manager Matt McMillan said: “Following the analysis of EncroChat messages as part of Operation Venetic, we believe we have disrupted a criminal operation to import vast quantities of drugs into the UK.

“The trade in class A drugs fuels violence and exploitation, and this investigation is yet another example of the NCA and Met Police working together to protect the public.”
