A Scots police officer narrowly escaped serious injury after a knife-wielding man attempted to stab him with a blade.
Cops were sent to a property on Abbey Park Avenue in St Andrews, Fife, at around 1.50pm on Tuesday, December 8.
Medical staff had called for help to deal with a 45-year-old man who is understood to have been experiencing mental health difficulties.
During the incident, the man tried to stab the officer with a bladed weapon - but thankfully struck his body armour meaning he escaped uninjured, a source has said.
Specially trained officers discharged a Taser during the incident before the man was taken to hospital for assessment.
A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that a report will be submitted to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.
A statement from the force said: "We received a report from medical staff requesting assistance at an address on Abbey Park Avenue in St Andrews around 1.50pm on Tuesday, 9 December.
"Officers attended and a Taser was deployed by specially trained officers. During the incident an attempt was made to assault a police officer with a bladed weapon.
"The officer was uninjured and a 45-year-old man was subsequently detained and taken to hospital for assessment.
"A report will be submitted to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) as standard procedure following the deployment of a Taser."
A spokesperson for PIRC said: ““Police Scotland referred this matter to PIRC as is standard when a Taser is discharged.
“Following assessment, PIRC concluded that the use of Taser was a necessary and proportionate response when confronted by someone acting in a violent manner who attempted to assault officers.”
