Scots knife thug behind brutal murder bid caught with mobile phone behind bars

A knife thug who brutally stabbed a man in the neck in a murder bid has been caught with a mobile phone in jail.

Martin Innes, who is serving a 14-year sentence, was found with the device in Edinburgh’s Saughton Prison.

The 35-year-old was slapped with a fortnight’s loss of privileges by jail bosses after the find.

Innes appeared from custody at the city’s sheriff court on Wednesday and admitted possessing the phone and an unauthorised sim card behind bars.

Fiscal depute Janet MacDonald said the phone was discovered on May 25.

Defence agent Stuart Carson said Innes had already been punished by prison authorities.

Mr Carson said the offence would also be on Innes’ prison record and affect his time inside.

Sheriff Matthew Auchincloss sentenced Innes to six months to run alongside his existing jail term.

In May 2019 Innes admitted attempting to murder Gordon Johnston by pursuing him and striking him on the neck with a knife in September 2018 in the city’s Moredunvale Place.

Innes also admitted assaulting William Gray by repeatedly striking him on the head with a knife on the same date at the same street.

The court heard Innes told police after he was arrested that he was the victim of a stabbing and showed officers a cut on his lip.

But the serial offender had stuck a knife in Gordon’s neck and wounded William on the face during a spree of violence.

The court was told Innes had 26 previous convictions for offences, including for serious assault.
