Scots kitchen fitter discovers secret message and gift hidden by previous owner under floor

A Scots kitchen fitter discovered a secret handwritten message and gift hidden under the floor by the previous owners for two decades.

Craig Harrigan, 35, was carrying out essential renovation work on a home in Edinburgh with his colleague last week when the pair stumbled upon a time capsule left untouched.

The kindhearted former owners had scribbled a message on the tiles 20 years ago - and even left a bottle of whisky for the next person to find urging them to 'have a drink on us'.

Sharing the surprise on Tik Tok, which has racked up 11,000 likes, Craig explained: "So we're stripping out a kitchen and we found a message under the floor."

The note read: "Jack and May lived here - three kids and a dug. Kitchen done up during April and May 2001..

"All the best, have a drink on us!"

Craig, from Perth, explained the secret note was actually written by the customer's dad, who had recently moved after selling the house to his daughter.

The kitchen fitter ended up cutting the section of floor for the client to keep forever, along with the miniature bottle of Glenkinchie - which would have aged an additional 20 years.

He told the Record: "We were stripping out the old kitchen last Friday morning.

"When stripping it, the apprentice tried to pull the bottle up and realised it was stuck. Then that’s when we noticed the message.

"So I called the customer in to show her and she said it was her mum and dad's old house that she recently bought and the note was written by her dad. She was one of the three kids.

"So we cut the section of floor out and gave her it to keep along with the bottle."

Craig explained that he often finds things hidden under floorboards when stripping kitchens.

He added" "We do find lots of old things. Cigarette packets, sweets wrappers. The thing I like finding the most of the news papers. A lot of them we can still read."

The video racked up thousands of views on TikTok after being shared on the video platform.

One person commented: "How lovely is that. I might do that when mine eventually gets done."

Others pointed out that the whiskey might be worth something if they hold on to it for a while longer.

One viewer advised: "Potentially a desirable whiskey, could be worth a wee bit."

Meanwhile, another person shared how they had a similar idea when refitting their kitchen - but the end result was much less mature.

They joked: "I did this in my kitchen when I refitted it, except I drew [genitals] and the date instead."
