Scots kids football coach killed in horror crash days after Christmas

A 'generous and loving' kids football coach was killed in a car crash days after Christmas.

Keith Smith died when his Vauxhall Astra collided with a Ford Kuga on the A6106 at Hillcrest, Danderhall, Midlothian, at 12.35pm on Tuesday.

The female driver and male passenger of the Ford Kuga suffered serious injuries and remain in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Keith, 41, coached local amateur team Edina Hibs for eight years and was known as 'Mr Edina'.

The dad, from Danderhall, was a massive Hibs fan with a passion for grassroots football and helping local children.

Keith’s family released a statement on Wednesday through Police Scotland. It read: “Keith Smith – a much loved and missed father of two, step-dad, grandad, partner, uncle, brother, son and friend to many in the community.”

Police Scotland are continuing to probe the smash.

Sergeant Paul Ewing, of the force’s road policing unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with Keith’s family and friends at this difficult time and we will continue to provide them with specialist support.

“We continue to appeal for any information surrounding the crash and would ask anyone who may be able to assist with our enquiries to come forward and speak to officers."

Police can be contacted by calling 101 and quoting incident 1196 for Tuesday, December 28.

Earlier Edina Hibs paid tribute to him. The club said: "Keith never took a penny for coaching and all he talked about was providing this service to local kids.

"It's this drive and heart that led him to be the brilliant person he was and a genuine community hero to many local kids.

"The phrase 'Mr Edina' has never been more accurate.

"We have lost a brilliant coach, but we have also lost a dear friend. The club is united with Keith’s family in mourning this devastating loss."

A fundraiser has been set up to help Keith's family pay for funeral expenses and has raised more than £1,000 after being launched hours ago.

A statement on the page said: "Keith was an outstanding, caring individual who was full of life and gave his all to help others in the community.

"For the past 8 years Keith has dedicated his life to coaching football to the kids of Edina Hibs in the South East of Edinburgh.

"Loads of children have had a great start in life thanks to Keith and he will be sorely missed by many.

"He will be forever remembered as 'Mr Edina'."

Others also paid tribute to popular Keith, who has been dubbed a community hero.

One wrote: "Can’t believe I won’t be able to chat about kids football with him again, his values about local football and accessibility was true community work at its best, RIP mate."

Another added: "RIP Keith.

"A fantastic coach to the Edina Hibs community and going the extra mile to help kids. A great friend and a good mentor to me."
