Scots kids encouraged to do the 'coronavirus handshake' to prevent spreading the disease

Scots children are being encouraged to adopt a brand new style of greeting to help prevent spreading coronavirus .

Youngsters who might ordinarily shake hands or greet each other with a high five are being asked to touch elbows to help in containing the ever-growing crisis.

The 'high elbow' idea came from BBC doctor twins Dr Chris and Dr Xand van Tulleken who present children's television show Operation Ouch!

In an episode of Newsround the doctors give advice to children on how to help prevent potentially spreading coronavirus.

Dr Chris told the show: "When I'm not presenting Operation Ouch I work at a  place called the Hospital for tropical Diseases in London and I treat patients with infections.

"Now there are lots of different kinds of coronavirus and some of them can make people seriously ill.

"It looks like at the moment almost everyone who has had this infection has recovered fully, so this is not a thing that you need to spend too much time worrying about.

"You can prevent this coronavirus spreading probably in the  same way you can prevent coughs, colds, influenza, which is by frequently washing your hands and trying to avoid touching your face.

His brother Dr Xand added: "But lots of the others will just give you a cold. You might even have had a coronavirus yourself.

"If you're in a large group of people you don't know and you want to make sure you don't catch anything off any of them, tell them all about the coronavirus handshake, which is a high elbow."

The Scottish Government today said Scotland is well prepared for a  coronavirus  outbreak as a joint UK action plan warned up to a fifth of workers could be off at its peak.

If, as is expected, the virus spreads, police will focus on public order and the most serious crimes.

Within the NHS non-urgent  hospital  procedures could be cancelled in the search for new beds, and retired health workers could be brought back to help.
