Scots Just Eat driver claims staff at Covid-hit call centre ignored social distancing guidelines

A Just Eat delivery driver said he was shocked by the lack of safety measures in place at Motherwell’s Sitel call centre while delivering food to staff.

The site, in Maxim Park, which has now become the centre of a Covid-19 outbreak, is currently under investigation for lack of social distancing.

A driver, who asked not to be named, told the Daily Record he observed no compliance with Government guidance at the site when delivering food multiple times a day.

He said employees were seen hovering around reception, out smoking together in large groups and failed to comply with the non-contact delivery system.

The man, from Airdrie, delivered food to staff at the centre multiple times a day.

He said: “I was there around 10 times as recently as last week in contact with staff as I handed over their meals in the crowded foyer area.

“Each time I've gone in to hand over a meal the whole reception area has been full of staff hovering around, and despite our orders being non contact each one has insisted on taking it from us violating our non contact rights.”

Just Eat said: “The health and safety of our customers, Restaurant Partners, employees, and couriers is our top priority.

“"We have implemented contact-free delivery across our network."

"This limits direct contact between customers, couriers, and restaurant staff to help keep everyone as safe as possible.”

The Just Eat drivers claim comes as the number of cases linked to the coronavirus-hit call centre has more than doubled to 14.

NHS Lanarkshire confirmed the sharp rise yesterday and added an additional five positive cases had arisen through contact links with those at the site.

Dr David Cromie, consultant in public health medicine at the health board, said: “A total of 14 positive cases associated with Sitel’s premises have been identified to date, with an additional five cases arising from linked contacts.

“We are taking all of the necessary steps to identify those who may have been in contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19 and to mitigate  the risk of onward transmission to others.

“We would like to reassure the local community that appropriate measures are being implemented.”

The Maxim Park site, in Eurocentral, near Bellshill, is currently under investigation for lack of social distancing. Staff who tested positive were working for NHS England’s Test and Trace programme.

Sitel were approached by the Daily Record for comment but referred to their earlier statement which can be read here.
