Scots hospital staff left freezing after queuing outside for hours in vaccine blunder

Scots NHS staff were left queueing for hours outside Glasgow's Royal Infirmary after a coronavirus vaccine blunder.

Hospital workers stood outside in freezing weather conditions after an administration error meant vaccination staff failed to show up.

NHS bosses issued an apology and promised to reschedule missed appointments this week.

Dozens of staff were forced to queue wearing scrubs in 2 degree weather for over two and a half hours, reports Glasgow Live.

A source told Glasgow Live : "We showed up and started queueing from 8. We were told vaccination staff hadn’t been turned up, and there was no vaccine. We were to return by 11AM.

"The queue was a mile long at 11AM when we were meant to start. I queued for two and a half hours before I got my vaccination, and even that was hours after my scheduled appointment.

"There were any number of surgeons in the queue and the amount of appointments for patients that have had to be cancelled as surgeons cannot make clinics or operations - it's a huge embarrassment."

Monica Lennon, Scottish Labour's Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “Rolling out the vaccine has to be the Scottish Government’s number one priority.

“This must be done as quickly and efficiently as possible, so it’s worrying to hear that frontline NHS staff are waiting in long queues.

“The Scottish government must ensure we have enough vaccinators and sites to prevent this from happening.

“Hospitals are struggling to cope and staffing levels are at crisis point. We need to make it easy as possible for staff to get their jabs.

“Health Secretary Jeane Freeman must update Parliament next week on how the vaccine programme is going and agree to publish a daily progress report.”

A spokeswoman for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde apologised for the delay.

She said: "We sincerely apologise to anyone who was unable to receive their COVID-19 vaccination this morning at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

"Unfortunately due to a scheduling error, vaccination staff were not on-site to provide vaccinations this morning. We are sorry for this mistake.

"We are making arrangements for those who have missed their appointment to be offered another appointment this afternoon or another appointment this week.
