Scots holidaymakers who are double-vaccinated will get 'real opportunity' to travel abroad this summer

Scots who are double-vaccinated will get a “real opportunity” to travel abroad on holiday summer, Boris Johnson has declared.

The Prime Minister dropped the biggest hint yet that quarantine rules could be dropped for fully vaccinated travellers who return from amber list countries.

The Prime Minister spoke as the UK government prepared to make a formal announcement on the latest travel guidance on Wednesday afternoon.

Quarantine-free holidays to Malta, the Balearic Islands and Madeira could be permitted in an update to the Government’s foreign travel policy, according to analysts.

Johnson told reporters: “I think the real opportunity we all have now is to open travel through the double jab.

“We’ve got more than 60 per cent of our population have now had two jabs, I think 83 per cent have had one jab, we’re really getting through it now. The crucial thing is come forward and get your second jab.”

On a visit to New Normandy Barracks in Aldershot, the PM added: “I’m not going to claim that this summer, for travel purposes, is going to be like any other summer. I don’t want to cast a pall over things but, as I said the other day, it will be different.”

Travellers arriving in the UK from amber list countries are required to self-isolate at home for ten days although negative testing can give an earlier release.

People arriving in the UK from green list destinations are not required to self-isolate, but there are currently no viable major tourist destinations in that tier.

There is another complication with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s call for other European countries to follow her lead in placing quarantine requirements on Britons.

Johnson said he has not yet made holiday plans himself. Last year he took is then fiance Carrie Symonds and son Wilfred to Wester Ross in the Highlands.

The PM said: “My plans at this stage are at the unformed stage, I’m afraid.”
