Scots holidaymakers could be banned from every country in EU thanks to Germany

The European Union could issue a bloc-wide rule banning anyone from the UK taking a holiday in countries including Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy this summer.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is calling on the EU to declare the UK a 'country of concern' and ban any non-essential travel.

If EU officials agree, that would mean no-one from the UK being allowed to enter any European country for a holiday - regardless of rules set by the UK Government.

Germany is concerned by the sudden rise in the Delta variant of Covid in the UK and wants to keep the virus out of continental Europe.

The UK Government will this week add 14 more countries to its green list - meaning people are allowed to travel there and return home without having to quarantine.

But many of those destinations already have strict rules which make holidays for UK travellers very difficult or impossible.

The UK Government wants to allow anyone who has had two doses of a Covid vaccine to go to any country not on the red list without having to quarantine.

The potential EU ban will be discussed on Monday by senior officials in the European Union, reports The Times.

If it goes ahead, no-one from the UK would be able to go on holiday to destinations such as the Balearics, Cyprus or Malta.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has invited Angela Merkel to the UK this Friday to discuss the move, among other issues.
