Scots holiday blow as Spain, Greece and France not included on 'green list'

Popular tourists destinations including Spain, Greece and France have been missed off the 'green list' in Scotland's new traffic light travel system.

Nicola Sturgeon announced the new international travel measures on Tuesday with countries placed in three categories - red, amber or green - depending on coronavirus cases.

Travellers returning from a 'green list' destination will not have to quarantine on their return, with the system mirroring the one adopted in England.

But Scots seeking a sunny holiday over summer have likely been left disappointed after popular holiday hotspots were left off the green list, meaning self-isolation is essential.

Currently, non-essential foreign travel is illegal but this is due to be lifted from May 17, allowing for holidays abroad once again.

During the coronavirus briefing, The First Minister said she was happy with the four-nations approach and that she would be "cautious" over the green list.

The SNP leader urged people not to book holidays abroad and encouraged staycations over summer instead.

Under Scottish Government guidance, you should only go abroad if you have "an essential reason to do so. You must not travel abroad on holiday".

The Scottish Government unveiled a raft of new restrictions set to be eased next week in the next phase of the roadmap out of lockdown.

Among changes to pubs and social distancing, it was confirmed rules on foreign travel would revert to a traffic light system from May 17.

People arriving home from a green country will not need to quarantine, but a passenger locator form and a PCR test shortly after arrival is necessary.

The Scottish Government has yet to publish full details on amber list countries, but will likely follow in England's footsteps and include places such as Malta, France and Italy.

Travellers returning from an amber list country also need to fill out a form, take a test and self-isolate at home for 10 days.

Red countries, including Turkey, Maldives and Nepal, would involve hotel quarantine at the cost of £1,750 for at least 10 days.
