Scots haggis firm sparks row over 'British' Union Jack packaging ahead of Burns Night

A haggis firm has sparked a fresh row from furious customers after punting a 'British' product with the Union Jack.

Stahly Quality Foods, based in Glenrothes, launched the 'Great British Haggis' two years ago in a bid to appeal to a wider audience.

Customers previously blasted the haggis after it was rebranded with a "new coat of red, white and blue with a subtle hint of tartan", while it was advertised to contain "the finest British ingredients".

Social media has now slammed the Scottish firm's product once again ahead of Burns Night later this month.

Pro-independence supporters took to 'It just has to be a Yes Vote' Facebook page to complain about the choice of packaging.

A post read: "The straw that broke the camel's back as they say was when they started labelling their world eating Scottish produce as British plastered all over with a Union Flag on it [sic]."

"The Scots take great offence to their quality Scottish products being rebranded as 'British'."

The post urges to people to 'drop a wee message' to Stahly's head office and added 'I'm sure that they will be delighted to hear from you Scotland'.

One person branded it a 'total disgrace', while another said they would not be 'wasting my time or money' on the product.

In an email to the firm, another wrote: "Bit disappointed to learn that you are using the Union Jack instead of the Saltire in your advertising.

"It's coming up to Burn's Supper and a lot of Scots will be looking for Scottish haggis".

The Haggis on the Stahly website is described as a "very modern version of a very traditional product" and is made with the traditional family recipe.

Other products include the Royal Haggis made with wild venison from the Highlands of Scotland in a tartan tin and traditional, vegetarian or whisky.

The Daily Record has contacted Stahly for comment.
