Scots great-gran to be reunited with family after coronavirus battle in hospital

A Glasgow great-gran is set to be reunited with her family after battling coronavirus in hospital for a number of weeks.

Rena Barr was raced to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where she would be fitted with a steel plate after breaking her arm in a fall, reports Glasgow Live.

The 88-year-old was then transferred to Gartnavel Hospital where she contracted coronavirus ten days later.

Nurses feared that Rena wouldn’t make it as her symptoms of Covid-19 became more apparent.

The Parkhead pensioner was put on a high amount of oxygen as she struggled to breathe and had a bad cough.

But after two weeks and two negative test results, Rena was transferred to another ward where she was able to celebrate her birthday with staff who cared for her and with her family on Zoom.

The mother-of-eight, who has 16 grand kids and 16 great-grandchildren, will be reunited with her family on Wednesday.

Daughter Sandra said: “It’s been really horrible not being able to see her and there were times the nurses thought she wouldn’t make it but they’ve been calling her a wee trooper.

“She’s got fine health apart from her mobility so she’s got carers in twice-a-day but generally she’s okay and we like to get her away a lot. She loves going away.

“She’d fell in her house and crushed her wrist so she needed surgery and they had to put a steel plate in. She was in the Royal Infirmary and then they moved her over to Gartnavel for physiotherapy. She was there about nine or ten days and then she got a nasty cough.

“She was in a ward for isolation and was on a high amount of oxygen while we were on standby for further deterioration. She was really confused and had a lot of pain in her back and leg.

“When we were able to speak to her she was really confused. I remember she said, 'I’ve been through the war but I’ve never seen anything like this.' It’s been emotional.”

Rena is now reportedly doing well since she later tested negative for Covid-19 (Glasgow Live)

After a difficult few months, Rena’s family are now preparing to welcome her home with a special celebration.

Family and friends will be lining her street (at a safe distance) to applaud her coming home. They’ve also made special banners for the occasion.

Sandra added: “We can't thank the nurses and doctors enough. They were excellent throughout it all.

“She looks the picture of health now and it’s hard to believe it. She’s come through it."
