Scots gran desperate to finish garden son-in-law started building with kids before sudden death

A Scots gran is on a mission to finish a special project her son-in-law had started with his two kids before he died suddenly this year.

Rail worker and landscaper Martin Rodger, 40, died on January 21 after his heart stopped and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.

He had started building a dream family garden with his two children Jaxon, seven, and Xander, five in the weeks before his death.

Wife Denni, 33, from Kirkcaldy, and their two boys have been left devastated by his sudden passing.

Denni's mum Janette Hamilton, 62, is hoping to complete the project for her two grandchildren and has launched a fundraiser to finish the garden.

She told the Record: "Martin and the boys started the garden together and they did spend a lot of time together in the garden as a family, often out in the Lazy Spa and roasting marshmallows.

"I wanted the boys to have a focus to work towards finishing the garden and have somewhere to go this summer as I think this year is going to be horrific for them.

"One of the things the boys said after he died was 'daddy will never finish the garden now'.

"Some of the wonderful guys Martin worked with doing landscaping have contacted me and said they will do the labour for free so I just need to buy the materials.

"The boys understand that daddy's body has died but they believe his soul went to heaven and that he is sending them help to finish the garden.

"It has helped them feel like he is close by them."

The family hope the finished garden will be a fitting memorial to keen bodybuilder Martin.

The extent of the renovation will depend on how much money they manage to raise but so far nearly £2,000 has been raised of the £5,000 target.

Janette said they were extremely grateful for all of the donations and offers of help so far.

She added: "Martin was a passionate body builder. He was very popular, he was funny and he was great.

"If anyone ever needed anything he would be the first to say 'how can I help'?

"Rebuilding their lives after this crushing loss is going to be hard, missing dad, not hearing his voice, or having his strong arms cuddle them, or cheer them on at swimming practice.

"No grandmother wants this for her grandchildren and healing is going to be hard but this project would give them something to focus on."
