Scots GP sacked after taking time off to care for dying dad wins £16k compensation

A GP who was sacked while taking time off to care for her dying father has been given £16,000 compensation.

Dr Alison Sneddon was working part-time at Tranent Medical Practice in East Lothian when her dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2019.

He moved into her home in North Berwick, East Lothian, but the toll of caring for him left her feeling unable to work and she was signed off by her GP.

Dr Sneddon offered to take unpaid leave but the offer was declined and, three days before her dad died, she was sacked by letter.

She made claims of discrimination and breach of contract.

The practice apologised and a deal was struck.

Tranent Medical Practise has been approached for comment.
