A Scots GP practice has had to apologise after a fault with its phone lines left the message "can you not listen to instructions you numpty?" caught on a loop.
Lerwick GP Practice on Shetland posted about the fault to their new phone system on Facebook this afternoon.
The surgery apologised for the 'rogue message' and to anyone who may have been offended after hearing it.
The Facebook post read: "Dear patients and colleagues, if you promise not to laugh, we will tell you about a little fault that appeared on our new phone system.
"Apparently, the programmers used test messages in the development stage of the new phone system.
"One of these messages is an auto message in an Alexa-style voice that says, ‘this option is not available, can you not listen to instructions you numpty?!’
"Unfortunately, the message was stuck on one of our phone options for several hours this morning!"
Shetland Islanders saw the funny side commenting under the social media post with amusement.
One user commented: "But is laughter not the best medicine?!"
Another said: "Brilliant! What a giggle!"
One added: "I think you should keep it as an option."
However, Lerwick GP Practice confirmed that they are now working with BT and their IT department to have the message removed.
They concluded: "We do believe it has given a moment of light relief to many of our patients and staff and has shown us that we don’t always get it right!"
