Scots girl stars in beautiful Down's Syndrome campaign recreating Disney characters

A Scots schoolgirl is starring as one of Disney's most famous villains in a new Downs's syndrome awareness campaign.

Five-year-old Devyn Curley stars as Darla from Finding Nemo in the stunning 'Down with Disney' campaign by photographer Nicole Perkins.

The campaign features children with Down's syndrome recreating some of Disney's most famous heroes and villains.

In the shoot Devyn, from Castlemilk in Glasgow, is pictured holding with 'Nemo' inside a water bag and shaking him, just like the Disney character does in the movie.

Devyn's mum Allison, 35, says she was thrilled her daughter was chosen to star in the campaign.

She said: " We are thrilled Devyn is involved in such a beautiful project. I think it's important to raise awareness on Down's syndrome. A lot of people are still not educated on it.

"People will say to me 'She is Down's syndrome' and I say to them, 'No, she is Devyn and she has Down's syndrome'. It doesn't define her. She is a lot more than the condition.

"She is a beautiful wee girl, she is smart and funny and can light up a room with her smile."

Birmingham based photographer Nicole also took shots of youngsters in various Disney guises, including Pocahontas, Jafar, Princess Tiana, Lilo and Stitch and Maleficent, amongst others.

Nicole says she ran the same campaign last year -which also starred another Scots girl, Chloe Lennon as Merida from Brave, and the response was so incredible, she decided to do it again this year with different kids and characters.

Nicole, who is a full-time teaching assistant in an additional needs school, said: "Last year's Down With Disney campaign was only small featuring just 12 well known Disney films.

"The response was amazing and it ended up going viral. Seeing how many people loved the campaign and how many hearts it touched I really wanted to do it again featuring even more films.

"Disney is such a special thing and the films carry such deep meanings when you really look into them.

Yannah Koroma Aged 9 As Princess Tiana (Nicole Louise Photography)

"A lot of them show a character who isn’t appreciated much and in some cases even feared as they are different from the people around them for example, Tarzan, Elsa, Hercules, Mulan, but once they are given a chance and people really get to know who they are they end up changing the world for the better.

Ben Bird Aged 15 As Sid Phillips (Nicole Louise Photography)

"I feel like this is the same message that needs to be put across about people who have Down syndrome.

Cameron Nutt Aged 15 As Jafar (Nicole Louise Photography)

"They are some of the strongest most amazing people you can ever meet.
"I will always try and help raise awareness and hopefully one day everyone will see the beauty of Down Syndrome."
