Scots garage boss threatened to 'torture' and 'murder' estranged wife's new boyfriend

A garage boss threatened to “torture” and “ murder ” a man who was going out with his estranged wife.

Clement Stephenson erupted in a jealous rage and chased Jamie Ross round and round a car in Midlothian as his shocked ex looked on.

The 44-year-old had only found out about her new love interest earlier that day and followed the pair.

When police officers arrived at the scene, irate Stephenson was still pursuing Jamie in circles around the vehicle.

Stephenson appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday and admitted a charge of threatening or abusive behaviour.

Fiscal depute Callum Thomson said Stephenson had been married to wife Mhari Stephenson but the couple had split.

The court heard Mhari and Jamie were in a car in Newtongrange, Midlothian, when they pulled over.

Mr Thomson said Clement Stephenson had been in a van on the road and also pulled up.

The prosecutor said Stephenson approached the passenger side where Jamie was sitting and he got out.

He said: “The accused has chased Jamie Ross round the vehicle shouting, “I’m going to kill you”, “I’m going to murder you”, “I’m going to torture you, and “I’m going to turn you inside out”.

Mr Thomson said Mhari had described her former partner as being in a “fit of rage” and called police.

He added the two constables arrived to “observe the accused chasing Mr Ross around the vehicle”.

The court heard the pursuit had stopped for a time before restarting before the cops got there at around 8pm on March 21 last year.

Defence agent Brian Gilfedder said there had been “no further trouble” between his client and Jamie.

Mr Gilfedder said Stephenson, a dad-of-two who runs his own garage, accepted there was “no justification” for his behaviour.

The solicitor said Stephenson had “received a message from his partner that she was going out with Jamie Ross”.

Mr Gilfedder said Stephenson alleged Jamie “taunted” him once the two vehicles were stopped although that wasn’t given as “mitigation just explanation”.

Sheriff Chris Dickson called it an “unpleasant incident”. He deferred sentence on Stephenson, of Mayfield, Midlothian, until next month for reports.
