Scots furious as Donald Trump claims telephone as American invention on Twitter

In today's weird news, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has created a stir on Twitter after claiming that the telephone is 'an American invention'.

Edinburgh-born Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish-born inventor, scientist, and engineer who is credited with inventing and patenting the first practical telephone.

A tweet from the White House's official Twitter account quoted Donald Trump this morning:

"Americans harnessed electricity, split the atom, and gave the world the telephone and the internet. We settled the Wild West, won two World Wars, landed American Astronauts on the Moon—and one day soon, we will plant our flag on Mars!"

There have since been plenty of responses to the tweet pointing out the inaccuracies in the statement.

"The Internet is English, the phone is Scottish, electricity was harnessed by an Englishman, the atom was first split at the University of Manchester, you used Nazi scientists to put you on the Moon and you didn't win two World Wars alone," wrote one user.

"Graham Bell invented the telephone. He was born in EDINBURGH which is in SCOTLAND", another added.

"Umm Donnie.... Bell was born in Scotland and then became Canadian. He invented the telephone...." one user commented.

It turns out that the telephone mistake wasn't the only inaccuracy in the tweet.

"Earnest Rutherford was from New Zealand, he won a Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on the disintegration of elements and the chemistry of radioactive substances in Canada. He also split the atom in Manchester," another Twitter user corrected.
