Scots flat fire was not gas explosion say cops as they continue probing blast

A fire at a home in Fife that left one man hospitalised is NOT believed to have been a gas explosion, according to police.

We told how emergency crews were called to Dewar Street in Dunfermline just before 2pm on Saturday.

Officers responded to reports of a blast and subsequent fire at a property in the area.

Local reports suggested that a boiler in the home had exploded before a flat was engulfed in flames.

A 35-year-old man was rushed to St John's Hospital in Livingston for treatment.

The nature of his injuries and current medical condition are yet to be disclosed.

A number of local residents were evacuated from their homes as a result of the inferno.

Police and fire crews confirmed the incident to the Record later on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday afternoon a spokeswoman from the force revealed that the blaze was not believed to be a gas explosion.

The property has been assessed and enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact cause.

The spokeswoman told the Record: “We were made aware of an explosion and subsequent fire at a property on Dewar Street, Dunfermline, around 1.50pm on Saturday, July 3, 2021.

“Officers attended to assist the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service at the scene.

“A 35-year-old man was taken to St John’s Hospital for treatment.

“A number of properties have been evacuated until the building has been assessed.

“Following enquiries it is no longer believed to have been a gas explosion and enquiries are ongoing.

“A joint investigation is being carried out alongside the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”
