Scots film director thanks 'genius' Martin Scorsese for movie-making advice

As movie-making masterclasses go, it was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Stan & Ollie creator Jon S Baird has revealed how Goodfellas director Martin Scorsese left him inspired after the pair had a FaceTime chat.

Peterhead-born Baird said the Hollywood movie legend had given him “brilliant” advice for his next film.

Baird, whose latest movie Stan & Ollie was nominated for three Baftas and a Golden Globe, hailed 77-year-old Scorsese as a “genius”.

He wrote on Twitter: “Just had a brilliant FaceTime with the genius that is Martin Scorsese, who, as always, gave me some incredible advice for my next film.”

The pair first met in 2015 when Baird was hired to direct an episode of US TV series Vinyl, which Scorsese produced.

They kept in touch and Scorsese hosted a special screening of Stan & Ollie in New York with Baird and the cast.

Baird, 47, won best director at the Bafta Scotland awards for Stan & Ollie, a biopic of comedy legends Laurel and Hardy, which starred Steve Coogan and John C Reilly.

His 2013 film Filth, which he wrote, directed and produced, won numerous awards. It was based on the bestselling novel by Irvine Welsh and starred James McAvoy, Jamie Bell and Jim Broadbent.
