Scots fans join Thirty Seconds to Mars on Big Weekend stage for 'once in a lifetime' moment

Scots fans of Thirty Seconds to Mars got the surprise of their lives when they were asked to join the band on stage at Radio One's Big Weekend in Dundee.

Kayleigh Lafferty from Glasgow was among the chosen few that got to share the stage alongside frontman and actor Jared Leto, along with her fiancé Kyle Watt, 26, and friends Robyn Leonard, 28, and Chris Russel, 26.

The group were approached by the rock band's team on Saturday when they were queuing up to see their set, but were left devastated when Thirty Seconds To Mars had to cancel their show last minute.

The 27-year-old thought they'd missed out an opportunity of a lifetime but their fortunes were tuned upside down when the band headlined on Sunday instead. On a video capturing the moment Jared Leto can be seen giving the lucky group high fives.

Kayleigh told the Record: "Aw it was amazing! Definitely the highlight of the full weekend!

"Yesterday we were queuing up at barrier to see the band and their team asked if we were fans and when we said yes they asked if we would like to be part of a cool project where we hold flags and join them on stage.

"Unfortunately the set got cancelled but today when we arrived for the band and again at the barrier the team noticed we still had our bands and asked if we were happy to do it today. I was really cool as I got to do it with my fiancé and best friend too!"

Kyle added: "Been a fan for 15 years so it was amazing! Once in a lifetime stuff, very lucky."

The Big Weekend in Dundee was dealt a blow after Thirty Seconds to Mars cancelled their performance due to “technical difficulties” on Saturday.

The crowd was eagerly awaiting their performance but the group failed to appear on stage an hour after their scheduled slot, which left festival-goers gutted.

Around 85,000 revellers are in attendance at Camperdown Park. A message confirming the tech issues was displayed on screens at either side of the main stage before a member of staff eventually emerged to confirm that their performance had been ditched.

Fans took to social media to complain after driving for hours to the show. Fortunately, their show was rescheduled for the Future Sounds stage on Sunday.

There's some big names to follow for the rest of the day with Lewis Capaldi headlining this evening. Other artists include Anne-Marie, Becky Hill, Niall Horan, Jeremiah Asiamah, Nothing but Thieves, Royal Blood, Wet Leg and Zara Larsson.
