Scots family throw virtual baby shower to cheer up mum-to-be stuck in isolation

A Scots mum-to-be stuck in isolation was left stunned after her family threw a huge virtual baby shower to cheer her up.

Gemma Boyd was feeling down about not seeing loved ones during her pregnancy as the coronavirus pandemic forces the country into lockdown.

But step-mum Lauren Newall, 35, was determined not to let her down as she is also missing out on her 21st birthday next month.

The selfless parent from Kirkmuirhill in Lanarkshire rounded up friends and family to take part in the baby shower on Zoom so the soon-to-be mum wouldn't be lonely in Lesmahagow.

Gemma who is 33 weeks pregnant said: “It was good it went really well, we enjoyed it.

“I knew they were planning something but I didn’t know what games they had planned or what we would be doing.

“It was nice to get at least something, I was really looking forward to my baby shower but obviously that couldn’t happen so I was really happy with what I got.

“It was crazy sitting all dressed up in a dress just sitting in the living room.

“I had got a dress a month ago and I needed to wear it so put that on and got myself done up.

“I’m missing my 21st next month it seems everything just happens at once, I will have a big celebration when this is all done.”

Lauren said: “Because of the situation with Covid-19 I had decided to organise a virtual baby shower for my step daughter.

“She’s missing out on her birthday because of this social distancing so just wanted to at least make this special.

“We played games and that was the pictures of the prizes.

“We measured the bump and granny Julie won that game.

“It was a good day and I just tried to make it extra special during the pandemic.

“We had balloons and banners delivered as well for during the day and had some beer and mocktails delivered for her and her partner.

“I chapped her door and left her a box with new PJ's and bath stuff and a candle for a wee surprise as well.

“We got a takeaway delivered to theirs as well and called it canteen quarantine, it was good.”
