Scots family paid £740k compensation after fatal crash horror

Two health boards have been ordered to pay part of a family’s £740,000 damages claim over the death of a road crash victim.

NHS Grampian and NHS Highland have each been ordered to pay more than £100,000 compensation to the family of travel agency owner Ian Widdowson because of significant errors in his treatment.

Ian died after a collision between two VW Polos on the B9089 near Kinloss in Moray on January 1, 2016.

Lady Wise ordered the payouts at the Court of Session yesterday after ruling that the 59-year-old could have survived the accident if he had received the appropriate care.

She ruled that the health boards were 30 per cent responsible for his untimely death, while Daniel Gordon, 24, the speeding driver of the other car
who died at the scene, was 70 per cent to blame.

Lady Wise ruled that £741,361 should be paid
in compensation to the family.

Gordon’s insurers, Liberty Insurance, have been ordered to pay about £518,000, while the health boards have to cover the remaining £223,000.
