Scots family of boy killed by lightning strike while playing football pay touching tributes

The Scots family of a nine-year-old boy who was killed by a lightning strike have paid touching tributes to their nephew.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the horror incident happened while Jordan Banks was playing football in Blackpool on Tuesday evening, but the youngster died a short while after arriving at hospital.

The tragic child's heartbroken aunt and uncle Carol Wilkie and Brian Low, who both live in Glasgow, paid tribute this week.

Aunt Carol said: "My nephews wee boy was struck with lightning and killed when out playing football. So tragic. He was 9.

"It's just horrible. Poor wee soul didn't deserve this.

"It's so heartbreaking. Can't get over it."

Uncle Brian said: "It was my nephew's son, he was struck by lightning playing football down in Blackpool.

"Fly high young man."

Another Scottish aunt of Jordan's, Michelle Low - who is originally from Glasgow - said: "There are simply no words, God bless you Jordan.

"God has taken one of a kind, love aunty shell." x

Posting a link to a GoFundMe fundraiser for the youngster - which has reached over £60,000 - Michelle added: "In memory of the most selfless little boy, much loved."

Meanwhile numerous other family members changed their profile pictures to a football with the words 'For Jordan x'.

Jordan's family wept as they visited a memorial at the football pitch on Wednesday morning.

His mum, dad and stepdad and other relatives hugged, and a family member sank to his knees and sobbed at the spot where the lad was hit before leaving a bouquet of flowers.

Jordan, a Liverpool FC fan, was praised by star James Milner for charity work earlier this year.

Officers from Lancashire Police were called shortly after 5pm on to fields near to School Road to reports a child had been injured.

Detective Superintendent Nick Connaughton of Lancashire Police said: "This is a truly devastating incident and our thoughts are wholeheartedly with the family and friends of the young boy, who has passed away, at this very sad and distressing time."
