Scots family desperate to fly brain dead gran home from Benidorm to say goodbye

A Glasgow family have been left heartbroken after their loved one was declared brain dead by Spanish medics after taking a sudden heart attack in front of her grandson.

Agnes Martin, who turns 74 today, is stranded in Benidorm after the attack in her Hotel Marina apartment on August 29.

'Wee Aggie's' grief-stricken family have been told her brain was starved of oxygen for far too long and she has no brain activity.

The Easterhouse pensioner, who was on holiday with her son William, daughter Karen and her grandsons Jack and William, collapsed whilst in the room with 18-year-old William.

The teenager panicked and called for help when he noticed his gran hunched over on a table.

A nurse rushed to help and performed CPR and mouth to mouth on Aggy.

They waited 25 minutes for the ambulance to arrive and were shocked when they were told paramedics did not have oxygen available.

Her niece Tricia Gowans, who has set up a fundraising page, told the Daily Record the family believe the lack of oxygen available could have worsened her condition.

Tricia added: "It's shocking. Her brain was starved for too long and getting the oxygen at the hotel could have made a huge difference.

"There is a total language barrier between the family and hospital staff.

"I know they have raised their concerns about the lack of oxygen but I think they are waiting to hear what they have to say."

The family are now desperately trying to raise enough money to fly popular Aggy home in a bid for her heartbroken loved ones to say their goodbyes whilst she is still alive.

Tricia said she is absolutely gutted at the thought of never seeing her beloved aunt again.

She added: "It's tragic. She doesn't deserve this. She's a wonderful wee woman and would go out her way to help anyway. She's so popular and well known in the area. Everyone loved her. We're all devastated.

"I can't deal with the thought of never seeing her again. It's heartbreaking

"We want to get home whilst she's still alive so we can all say a proper goodbye to her. Her son and her grandkids are here and are desperate to see her."

Aggie, who has been described as 'special lady' and 'one of a kind' suffered from high blood pressure and her family are unaware if this was declared to her travel insurance company.

Tricia added: "It's going to cost £24,000 to fly her home on a medical plane or £15,000 by ambulance. It would take three days in the ambulance and we don't know if she will last that long. At the moment we don't have enough to pay for any of these. We are asking for peoples help. We want her home and would really appreciate any help. We're desperate."
