Scots face Halloween washout after forecasters issue two weather warnings

Scots are facing a Halloween washout tomorrow after forecasters issued two yellow weather warnings across the country.

The first of the weather warnings will come into effect from 3am on Sunday and will impact Scots in the south west of the country.

Experts warn that around 30mm of rainfall could land in places like Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire and the Borders in just two or three hours.

Torrential showers are expected to cause more flooding chaos for this region, with public transport and the roads set to be affected.

Winds are also expected to pick up this area, with gusts set to exceed 40mph in some parts.

Two yellow warnings have been issued by the Met Office (Met Office)

The Met Office has kept this weather warning in place until 6am on Monday.

A notice on the weather website reads: “A band of rainfall will arrive across western Wales on Sunday morning, and push quick northeastward clearing this region to the north east by late Sunday morning.

“This rain will only last two to three hours in any one location but within this time it is thought likely that some locations will see 20-30mm of rainfall.

“From Sunday afternoon through to Monday morning, further spells of rain and showers will continue to impact this region bringing an additional 20-30mm to some locations.

“Recent heavy rainfall has left many places sensitive to more wet weather - and rainfall totals on Sunday could cause some further surface water flooding.

“The wind will also strengthen during this time, and although impacts from wind alone are expected to be very low, the wind will likely increase leaf fall from trees, which coupled with the rainfall will increase the risk of localised flooding and make travelling conditions even more tricky.”

A further yellow rain warning has also been issued for Aberdeenshire and surrounding areas from 10am to 7pm on Sunday, October 31.

Flooding is also set to rock this area with gusts also approaching 40mph by mid afternoon, according to forecasters.

The Met Office notice for this warning reads: “An area of heavy rain, accompanied by strong to gale force winds, will move northeastward across Scotland on Sunday.

“Conditions are quite saturated following recent rainfall, so this additional rain will probably lead to some flooding from surface water or small rivers.

“Rain will ease by late afternoon but scattered heavy showers may prolong any impacts.”

The news will be a blow to Scots hoping to go out guising tomorrow night - with thousands expected to hit the streets for the first time for Halloween in two years.

Scotland has also been battered by heavy rainfall for most of this week, with homes and businesses being struck by flooding while a number of drivers have been rescued from their cars in recent days.

A major incident was declared in Hawick after some properties were engulfed in flood waters on Thursday.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) currently has 11 flood alerts in force across Scotland.

Scots in Dumfries and Galloway, Tayside, Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire, Central, Dundee, Edinburgh, Fife, Moray, the Borders and West Central Scotland have been told to brace themselves for flooding.
