Scots easyJet passenger fumes after new luggage policy leaves him out of pocket

A Scots easyJet passenger has been left fuming after the firm’s new luggage policy left him £24 out of pocket.

The traveller arrived at Edinburgh Airport with a small cabin bag for his one-hour flight to London on Sunday.

But he was challenged by staff when they measured each passenger’s luggage.

easyJet staff claimed that the two-inch wheels on his cabin bag did not meet the measurements in their new luggage policy - meaning that he would have to pay £24 for the bag to be stored in hold.

The passenger was charged extra to put the bag into hold (PA)

The passenger told Edinburgh Live that it is the first time that he has had problems boarding with the bag.

And it appears that he is not the only one, as a number of holidaymakers have reportedly encountered similar issues since the new luggage rule was introduced earlier this year.

He said: “I have a cabin bag with wheels that no longer fits their new system.

"My case actually fit in the space, although my wheels wouldn’t with them now measuring it sideways. So I was charged an additional £24 to load it into the hold, even though it was a two-inch wheel that wouldn’t fit their system.

"The staff were visibly unhappy about having to do it, and I understand it’s not their fault but unfortunately they are the face of the company so bear the brunt of frustrations."

The new easyJet policy allows passengers to bring on "one small cabin bag with a maximum size 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including any handles or wheels).

"Customers who have booked an Up front or Extra legroom seat can also bring on board one additional large cabin bag with a maximum size 56 x 45 x 25 cm (including any handles or wheels)."

Responding to the allegations, easyJet acknowledged that a passenger who has flown prior to the policy changing will have been able to fit their large cabin bag in the previous sizer at the time, and will have been able to bring this onboard.

However, the airline also enforced that their advertised new policy clearly states the new baggage allocations for different tickets, and that wheels and handles are included in these dimensions.

A spokesperson for easyJet said: All easyJet customers can bring one under seat cabin bag on board for free and any customers who have booked an Up Front or Extra Legroom seat can also bring a large cabin bag on board.

“Customers arriving at the gate with any bags outside of the allowance on their booking, including any bags that don’t fit in the relevant sizer, will be required to have their bag placed in the hold at the gate for a fee.

“We clearly advise all customers of their cabin bag allowance including dimensions during booking, in their booking confirmation, when checking in online or via the app and in pre-travel information sent 48 hours before departure and we remind customers to ensure they check this before they travel to avoid any charges.”
