Scots Drag Race winner Lawrence Chaney's iconic purple outfits is tribute to late grandmother

Lawerence Chaney stole our hearts on last season of Ru Paul's Drag Race and when they were crowned the winner, they promised a 'purple reign'.

The drag superstar, from Glasgow, is well known for donning extravagant deep purple outfits and wigs but now the 24-year-old has opened up about the true significance of the colour.

Many thought it was a tribute to late singer Prince, but Lawerence has since revealed that the colour purple is a tribute to their late grandmother, who the family referred to as 'wee purple blob'.

Speaking to The BBC, Lawrence said: "She always wore purple ... we always called her the wee purple blob. I mean, she never liked us calling her the wee purple blob!

"My gran passed away in 2010 and ever since then I promised to carry on her purple reign. That’s why when I won Drag Race I was like ‘who’s ready for the purple reign?’

"It was just a true celebration of my gran [she] taught me how to paint, taught me how to draw. I really do think most of my makeup skills and my artistic side comes from my gran."

Lawrence has been extremely successful since winning the show and is said to have bagged £60,000 plus in earnings on social media since being crowned the winner.

Money experts at NetVoucherCodes.co.uk posted a breakdown of past contestants and the cash they are expected to have earned according to analysis of their social media accounts.
