Scots dog owners warned of walking near water as five-mile limit is lifted

Scots dog owners are being warned of the dangers of coastline walks as the country's lockdown restrictions continue to lift.

RNLI Anstruther Lifeboat issued the warning on Friday as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told Scots that more rules and guidelines would be lifted or eased, as we continue to suppress coronavirus.

The organisation released a video of a series of past dog rescues from river banks, cliff edges and even out at sea.

A statement from RNLI Anstruther Lifeboat read: "As restrictions on lockdown continue to ease around Scotland, we’d like to ask for your help!

"Please continue to follow Scottish Government Advice about travel and don’t put yourself or your family at risk.

"Take care when visiting the coast and be mindful of the risk of cold water.

"Many of our shouts are to dogs in the water."

"So please read and share the following advice: It's important to keep yourself safe when you walk your dog.

"Keep them on a lead if you're close to cliff edges or fast flowing rivers.

"If your dog goes into the water or gets stuck in mud, don't go after them.

"Move to a place where your dog can get to safely and call them – they’ll probably get out by themselves.

"If you're worried about your dog, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard."
